Paris in 3 days: art, riverbanks, and a little breathing room

Paris is more enjoyable when the spaces between the sights are part of the trip. This plan balances a few big experiences with neighborhood time and a proper lunch.

THE SHORT VERSION

Book your priority museum or viewpoint first, then arrange nearby walks and meals around it. Keep a neighborhood afternoon free of appointments.

Reserve the experiences you care about

Choose one major museum and decide whether you want to go up the Eiffel Tower or simply enjoy its exterior views. Read the official booking options before buying a package. Tower tickets can differ by level and access method; museum exhibitions and gallery access can also change.

Plan around the calendar. The Louvre normally closes on Tuesdays and the Musée d’Orsay on Mondays. Recheck the official visitor pages for your date, especially around holidays. If you are arriving on the train from London, use the transfer day for a lighter introduction rather than forcing it into a full itinerary.

Day 1: the Eiffel Tower area and the river

Start with the Eiffel Tower visit if you hold a timed booking. Leave room for security and read what your ticket actually covers. A meal reservation or a second-floor ticket does not automatically mean summit access. If conditions affect the tower, use the operator’s current information to make decisions.

Spend the rest of the day near the river instead of crossing Paris repeatedly. Choose a stretch to walk and a comfortable lunch stop. A Seine experience can be enjoyable, but check its boarding point and whether it is sightseeing, transport between stops, or a meal cruise. Those are different uses of time.

Day 2: choose your art, then slow down

Give your priority museum the morning or another generously sized block that suits its opening schedule. Choose the Louvre for the collection you want there or Orsay for its particular artistic focus. Our museum comparison guide helps you avoid treating both as a compulsory same-day pair.

Afterward, leave room for lunch and a shorter walk. The best part of an art day may be the conversation that follows it. Do not book a second museum simply to complete a checklist if your first visit has already filled your attention.

Day 3: the islands and one neighborhood

Explore the central islands and the surroundings of Notre-Dame, subject to current access and works. Entry to the cathedral itself is free, with an optional official reservation system. Separate attractions, including towers or treasury access, have their own arrangements; a paid exterior walking tour is not the same as a required cathedral ticket.

Choose the Marais or another neighborhood for a more open afternoon. Use our Seine and neighborhood guide as a starting point. Finish with a concert, performance, or relaxed dinner if you want an evening plan.

Move between areas without losing the day

Use Île-de-France Mobilités for current tickets and routes. Airport travel has specific ticket requirements, so do not assume that an ordinary local journey ticket covers the airport. Read the current instructions for loading and validating tickets on a pass or supported phone.

In winter, shorten outdoor sections and retain an indoor alternative. With children or limited stamina, one major attraction per day may be plenty. Our winter Paris guide and evening guide offer ways to adjust this framework.

Common questions

Should I book both major museums in one day?

Usually that makes a first visit rushed. We suggest one major museum at a time, with room for meals and a neighborhood walk.

Is entry to Notre-Dame Cathedral free?

Yes. The cathedral publishes free access and an optional official reservation system. Other areas or separately sold services can have different terms.
