THE SHORT VERSION
Reserve one anchor experience per day, keep lunch unhurried, and use the river and neighborhoods to connect the rest.
Before you arrange the days
Choose your priority first: a historic attraction, a museum collection, or a particular performance. Book that appointment before adding optional stops. This plan assumes three full days; arrival and departure days need a lighter version. A flight landing in the morning does not automatically give you a fresh sightseeing day.
For transport, TfL supports pay-as-you-go with contactless or Oyster. Use the same card or device consistently rather than switching between your phone and the physical bank card. Check current airport arrangements separately. Avoid locking in a fare estimate for an early-2027 trip based only on today’s prices.
Day 1: Westminster and the South Bank
Begin around Parliament Square and the exterior views of the Palace of Westminster and Elizabeth Tower. If you want to enter a nearby attraction, give it its own booking and time allowance. Viewing a landmark from the street and going inside are different experiences.
Cross Westminster Bridge to the South Bank and walk east as far as your energy and the weather suggest. Our South Bank walking guide gives you stopping points and shorter versions. Build lunch into the route. A sightseeing cruise can replace part of the walk, but check its actual pier rather than assuming it departs wherever you happen to finish.
Day 2: a museum morning and a West End evening
Choose the British Museum or the National Gallery according to your interests. Both offer free general collection entry, with separate arrangements for some exhibitions. Check the museum’s current booking guidance and pick a few galleries you most want to see. A focused visit is more rewarding than trying to exhaust the collection.
Spend the afternoon around the area you choose for dinner and your show. The West End and live-events guide explains what to check before buying. Leave room to return to your accommodation if you need a rest or somewhere to leave bags.
Day 3: the Tower and a slower finish
Make the Tower of London the anchor if it is on your list. Read the official opening calendar, entry inclusions, and access guidance before reserving. The site is a substantial visit, not a brief photo stop, and individual areas can be affected by conservation work.
After lunch, enjoy riverside views near Tower Bridge or choose a neighborhood afternoon. Do not add a distant excursion simply because the map looks manageable. If your train to Paris leaves the next morning, this is a useful evening to pack, download your ticket, and confirm the station journey.
Make it work for your trip
In cold or wet weather, move your museum visit into the worst forecast window and keep outdoor walks shorter. Our winter London guide is designed around that flexibility. With children or limited walking stamina, choose one main attraction and one optional extra per day.
Budget for lodging, meals, transport, admissions, and any tours independently. A sightseeing pass is worth comparing only after you know which paid attractions you will actually use. For both cities in one holiday, see our London–Paris train planning guide.

Common questions
Can I do this itinerary without a tour?
Yes. The route can be arranged independently. Optional tours may add context or transportation, but are not required for the walks or free museum collections.
Does this include travel days?
No. It assumes three full days in London. Shorten the plan if arrival, departure, or recovery time takes part of those days.
